Giving Gondwana Collection Namibia's Goods a Second Life

Every year, Gondwana Collection Namibia's lodges refresh their linen, furniture and fittings. Not because these items have worn out, but because guest-facing spaces need a certain polish. What happens next says a lot about how Gondwana Collection approaches sustainability: rather than treating these goods as waste, the Gondwana Care Trust channels them to partners who can put them to good, continued use.

A Mountain of Linen for Umbrella Initiatives

On 28 August, GCT delivered a large batch of linen, curtains, blinds, salt, small plates, jars and lampshades to Umbrella Initiatives, a Windhoek-based network connecting donors with over 30 local NGOs. The scale of the delivery reportedly transformed the organisation's sorting space, with volunteers spending a weekend working through the haul before distributing items across their partner network. This is proof that a single donation, sorted well, can ripple out to dozens of causes at once.

A Professional Workspace at Nhoma Safari Camp

Near Nhoma village in the Otjozondjupa Region, repurposed steel kitchen tables, wooden storage shelves and a fridge have given the women of Sàn Botanica — a group of Ju|'hoansi entrepreneurs who craft cosmetics from indigenous plants — a proper working space to craft and store their products. Their range, now also stocked by Trendhaus Swakopmund at the coast, includes balms, scrubs and a beadwork-decorated perfume made from wood and grass roots harvested on their own land. The nearby community school also received blinds, curtains, linen and towels for its hostel, with other donors stepping in to help complete the setup.

A Chandelier's New Home at Promiseland

An old chandelier from The Delight Swakopmund found an unexpected second life at Promiseland's Walvis Bay centre, where older boys attending a school holiday programme incorporated it into a mobile art installation for the school hall. Project coordinator Jenny Esterhuizen shared that the piece "looks beautiful and gives a lot of joy."

Toys and Essentials for Hope Village

During the last week of August, the Care Trust also sorted through lost-and-found items from various lodges, selecting clean, good-quality pieces and a selection of children's toys for Hope Village, a Windhoek children's home caring for vulnerable and orphaned children.

Part of a Bigger Picture

None of this is incidental. Repurposing material rather than discarding it is standard practice across the Gondwana Collection's properties, from construction materials reused on-site to the crushed glass that paves walkways at The Desert Grace. These are all part of a broader commitment to a circular economy. Extending that same thinking to household goods and furniture means fewer items end up unused, and more communities benefit from what Gondwana Collection's lodges no longer need.

It's a small shift in framing, but an important one: this isn't about offloading leftovers. It's about recognising that a good chandelier, a working fridge or a stack of clean linen still has plenty of life left. And our partnerships across Namibia's development and community sectors are often what get it there.
