Gondwana Collection's Environmental and Social Initiatives

By Gondwana Collection
April 14, 2024

The team behind Our Sustainable World, a documentary series spotlighting businesses aligning with the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, recently journeyed through East and Southern Africa to showcase inspiring sustainability efforts.

In Namibia, Gondwana Collection Namibia was one of the selected businesses highlighted as an example of sustainable and responsible tourism. The team filmed at three Gondwana properties, namely Palmwag Lodge and Camp, The Desert Grace and Canyon Lodge.

At the heart of Gondwana's ethos lies a commitment to conservation and sustainability. The roots trace back to the founding principle of financing rewilding and conservation projects in Namibia's southern region. This dedication manifests prominently in the Gondwana Canyon Park, where over 100,000 hectares of open, unfenced land provide a sanctuary for wildlife. Notably, strategically placed watering holes ensure essential hydration for local fauna, while tree planting initiatives pave the way for regenerative tourism, ensuring future generations enjoy a thriving ecosystem.

Across all Gondwana lodges, a concerted effort towards environmental stewardship is evident. Water conservation takes precedence, with each site equipped with water recycling units to treat and reuse water, mitigating strain on local water resources. Furthermore, waste minimisation practices, such as repurposing food waste and widespread adoption of solar energy, underscore Gondwana's commitment to sustainability.

Beyond environmental endeavours, Gondwana invests significantly in its people, fostering a culture of empowerment and pride among employees. Emphasising internal development, cultivating a highly skilled and dedicated team, delivering exceptional guest experiences. Moreover, the community engagement extends to supporting local initiatives, from renovating schools to enhancing healthcare access at Palmwag Lodge and Camp, and providing educational resources for children through the Gondwana Care Trust.

In the words of an independent environmental expert, Gondwana's commitment to sustainable and regenerative tourism is exemplary. Environmental, social, and financial sustainability form the cornerstone of the operations, setting a commendable standard for the tourism industry.

Stay tuned for the feature on Our Sustainable World, scheduled for release at the end of 2024.
