At Gondwana Collection Namibia, we’re always looking for sustainable ways to enhance our gardens and reduce waste. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our new vermicomposting initiative. A collaboration between Gondwana Collection and Green Planet!
By harnessing the natural power of red wiggler worms, we’re creating nutrient-rich compost to nourish our plants and promote healthier soil at our vegetable gardens.
What is Vermicomposting?
Vermicomposting involves using worms, specifically red wigglers, to break down organic waste, like kitchen scraps and leaves into high quality compost. Unlike traditional composting, vermicomposting is faster and produces compost rich in beneficial microbes and nutrients.
The activity of the worms aerates the soil and improves its water retention, all while reducing our ecological footprint. The result is healthier plants, stronger root systems, and a more vibrant garden—without the need for synthetic fertilizers.
And the best part? Vermicomposting can seamlessly continue in your garden, with worms enriching the soil directly, without posing a threat to the plants, fruit or vegetables.
While we’re only rolling out this pilot project at two of our properties: a large garden composter at The Delight Swakopmund and a compact worm starter kit for nurturing and breeding worms at Canyon Lodge. Our goal is to expand vermicomposting across all Gondwana Collection properties.

to breed worms and produce usable compost.
Lodge staff, with the guidance of Gondwana Collection’s environmental and social impact team, will add kitchen scraps such as fruit and vegetable peels, ensuring the compost bins remain shaded and moist. Items with strong odours, like onions and garlic, and cooked foods are avoided to maintain worm health and productivity. These simple yet important tips are sent to the lodges with the compost boxes for guidance.
Whether you’re running a lodge, cultivating a veggie patch, or just looking for a greener way to manage your kitchen waste, vermicomposting offers an affordable, sustainable, and incredibly rewarding solution. For those interested in the compost boxes, check out Green Planet's website.
