Overview & Location

Campsites on the riverbank are among the greatest places to set up tents, take out chairs and a good book and be lulled by the gentle river song. It’s time to leave behind day-to-day concerns and reconnect with nature. In this remote area, you are explorer and adventurer in a new and different world.

After a dusty drive of earthy colours with several baobabs marking the way, the verdant green band of Makalanis comes into view. Welcome to Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite! Epupa is a small Kunene River oasis, with local OvaHimba people dressed in traditional garb and the gentle flow of the river unaware of its exciting 40m plunge down the rocky gorge. 10 Campsites, with power points and shared ablution facilities are a perfect spot to become one with your surroundings.

Spend time absorbing the jubilant energy at Epupa Falls and partake in the exhilarating lodge activities. Join a guided visit to a Himba village, an exciting rafting tour or the sundowner walk to a spectacular viewpoint above the falls. Experiencing the great outdoors in places like Epupa lifts the soul, energises and inspires.

An adventurous 180km from Opuwo, the road will take you deep into the Kaokoland, ending on the banks of the Kunene River. Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite is an unexpected treat in the far north of Namibia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are included at the Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite?

The Omarunga Epupa-Falls campsite offers grass-covered, shaded individual sites located right on the banks of the Kunene River, each equipped with a dedicated power point, electrical light, and a brick braai/fireplace. Clean, communal ablution blocks are centrally located on-site, providing campers with dependable hot-water showers and washing areas.

Can campsite guests use the facilities at Omarunga Epupa-Falls Camp?

Yes, independent campers enjoy full access to the main Omarunga Epupa-Falls Camp facilities, including the swimming pool, the riverside bar, and the activity booking desk. Campers can also pre-book breakfast or dinner at the lodge restaurant, subject to seating availability upon arrival at reception.

Is it safe to swim in the river at the Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite?

No, swimming in the Kunene River is strictly prohibited due to strong currents and a high concentration of large Nile crocodiles. Campers must stay a safe distance from the water's edge and are encouraged to use the lodge's fenced swimming pool to cool off safely.

What is the maximum capacity per campsite at Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite?

Each individual campsite comfortably accommodates a maximum of six people and easily fits an overlander vehicle, a 4x4 with rooftop tents, or multiple ground tents. The sites are explicitly designed with wide clearances to allow easy maneuvering for rugged off-road vehicles.

Is Wi-Fi available at the Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite?

Wi-Fi access is primarily available around the main lodge reception and restaurant deck area rather than directly at the individual campsites. This allows overlanders to stay connected and update itineraries while enjoying an off-the-grid wilderness camping experience by the river.

Can I purchase firewood and ice at the Omarunga Epupa-Falls Campsite?

Yes, basic camping necessities such as firewood, ice blocks, and bottled water can be purchased directly from the Omarunga Epupa-Falls Camp reception desk. For extensive grocery shopping or specialized supplies, travellers should completely stock up in Opuwo before driving north.
