Gondwana Care Trust celebrates the end of 2022

The Lighthouse Community Hope Center – Windhoek

Most of the children visiting the center come from disadvantaged homes. Namibian Schools close at 1:00 PM, and kids are on their own for the rest of their day. When the children arrive at the Lighthouse, they are welcomed with a hot meal, and a safe place to study and play.

The Lighthouse team encourages the children to develop healthy social relationships that will guide them into their adult years, choosing good friends and making wise choices.  The Gondwana Care Trust, through the MealForTwo Program, assists the Lighthouse Community Hope Centre with groceries on a monthly basis so that the children can receive a healthy meal.

One of the programs includes Archery. The Archery team is one of their most successful programs. Started in 2016 the patriots have improved each year. In 2019 and 2021 they won the Namibian National Championship Competition. 7 members were chosen to represent Namibia on the National team and one member was selected to be on the All Africa international team.

The Lighthouse Community Hope center also benefits from the Back-to-School Christmas Bags. At the end of the year, the children received a bag filled with a basic stationery kit to start school in January, as well as a a toy or gift according to their age and need. Teenagers also receive some hygienic products such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, body lotion, sanitary pads for girls and little gifts to make their Christmas a bit brighter.

Omaruru Children’s Haven – Omaruru

The Omaruru Children’s Haven offers a safe home to 35 children and young people, whose families cannot take care of them. The children live in four housing blocks in family based groups, in which they can experience a family-like co-existence, develop and grow up. The Omaruru Children’s Haven was originally founded as a home for street children and orphans in 2001 by the Catholic Priest Johannes Neudegger in the city of Omaruru in Namibia. It was run by Neudegger and was home to housemother Gerhardine Tsuses.

Between 2006 and 2008 the Haven continued to grow and change. Thanks to the purchase of a neighbouring property, 35 children and young adults have been living in the Omaruru Children’s Haven since 2012, under the supervision of five housemothers. A green house, a computer laboratory and a workshop were set up to expand the children’s educational opportunities. In July 2012, the first house, based on the family based model, which is also practiced by the SOS Children’s Villages, was put into operation. After a structural conversion of one house from the end of 2018 to Spring 2019, a family based living is now also possible in the other three housing blocks. Since the beginning of 2021, the children and young adults, who belong to the same family-group have been living together under the care of a house mother in the same house.

Recreational activities

Not only do the children pursue their hobbies in the Haven, they also take part in activities in external recreational groups and teams. This allows them to develop individual interests and to encourage them in life. The interests range from artistic talents, which are represented in the art club and the choir, over various sports, such as football and basketball, to strategic chess.

The Gondwana Care Trust was able to assist the Omaruru Children’s Haven with goods and delivered Back-to-School Christmas Bags to the children for their Christmas celebration.
