Over this past weekend, the Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park near Aus was graced with fresh showers and nature has responded spectacularly. Following rains and frosty (near snowy) days, this year is arguably shaping up to be one of the most breathtaking wildflower seasons in recent memory.
Golden hour, golden daisies and wild desert horses! The desert doesn't come short of stunning surprises.
The usually rugged landscape is now ablaze with colour, with seven dominant flower species carpeting the ground in striking yellows and soft violets. This rare desert bloom will continue for the next one to two weeks, offering travellers a fleeting but unforgettable glimpse of the Succulent Karoo in full splendour.
Among the violet hues, you’ll find the delicate Blou sporrie (Heliophila deserticola) and the charming Blou sambreeltjies (Felicia namaquana). But it’s the yellow blossoms that truly steal the show- including the iconic Aus daisy (Arctotis fastuosa), Berg Botterblom (Gazania jurineifolia), Harige Botterblom (Hirpicium echinus), !!Kuibee (Grielum sinuatum), and Gans ogies (Faveolina dichotoma).
Nature’s desert palette is on full display with Blou sambreeltjies and Arctotis fastuosa- but not for long!
While flowers in some sections may start fading soon, other areas are only now beginning to bloom, meaning the spectacle is far from over. Visitors to Klein-Aus Vista can take part in a desert excursion that depart into the park daily. This is the Succulent Karoo at its finest- rare, radiant, and resplendent. Don’t miss this once-in-a-year desert bloom!
