Gondwana Collection Namibia

Stargazing at Kalahari Anib Lodge

By Gondwana Collection
July 02, 2020

Have you ever dreamt of diving deep into our Namibian night sky to learn more about the earth’s most distant galaxies? Then our Stargazing Evening at Kalahari Anib Lodge on 11 July 2020 from 18:30 is just for you.

After the sun sets at 18:22, you will observe all kinds of astronomical phenomenons including the fringe of the Earth’s shadow and the first brightest stars appearing in the night sky, together with the hobby astronomer Lutz von Dewitz. As the night fades into darkness, you will look at planets such as Jupiter and Saturn, various star clusters, Omega Centauri and Herschels Jewel Box Cluster as well as the most recognisable constellations and stars, including the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Has your interest been sparked just yet?

Don’t miss this wondrous experience in which Lutz’ high quality telescope, a Skywatcher 180mm Maksutov-Cassegrain on a motorised Goto Mount (maximum magnification is about 300x) allows for a spectacular close-up of the evening sky. Bring a torch with red light along or simply tape a red piece of plastic in front of the lens of your torch. Please dress warm.

Guests can also have a closer look at the sun through a special sun telescope (Coronado PST) on Sunday morning. If you are lucky you will be able to observe some active sunspots or a solar prominence.

The Stargazing Evening takes place in the boma of Kalahari Anib Lodge, far away from any light pollution. The lodge is situated 30 km northeast of Mariental on the C20. For guests of Kalahari Anib Lodge, Camping2Go and Camping, participation is free of charge. 20 places are available.

Please book in advance at bookings@gondwana-collection.com
