Gondwana Spreetshoogte Challenge 2024 – It’s a wrap!

By Gondwana Collection
June 24, 2024

Over the past few weeks, Gondwana Collection Namibia has been gearing up for the Spreetshoogte Challenge, which took place on 22 June 2024. The challenge was approximately 24 km, starting at the Barkhan Dune Retreat's Rooidak Padstal on the way to Sesriem or Sossusvlei.

The scenic yet demanding terrain between Solitaire and Nauchas set the stage for the breathtaking (literally) Spreetshoogte Challenge. The event saw enthusiastic participation from 26 runners spanning various age groups, all eager to conquer the chilling Spreetshoogte Pass.

The race, renowned for its steep climbs and stunning views, was a test of endurance and determination. In the men’s category, Thomas Miller, a familiar face in Gondwana challenges, clinched first place with an impressive finish time of 1 hour and 27 minutes. Martin Kalwenya followed closely, securing second place with a time of 1 hour and 38 minutes, while Frans Amakali completed the top three, crossing the finish line in 1 hour and 42 minutes.

The women’s category saw Pamela Hailapa emerge victorious, completing the race in under 2 hours. Tanja Hlasek earned the second spot with a time of 2 hours and 41 minutes, narrowly edging out Tari Profit, who finished a second later to claim third place.

Gondwana Collection Namibia generously sponsored the event, offering vouchers valued at N$8000, N$6000, and N$4000 for the winners in each category. The prizes were a fitting reward for the participants' hard work and dedication.

“This run was experimental; we now know what to do better for the next one. As always, thank you to everyone who participated,” said Manni Goldbeck, Brand and Marketing Director for Gondwana Collection Namibia, reflecting on the success and learnings from the event.

The Spreetshoogte Challenge lived up to its reputation as a demanding yet fulfilling race. Still, a few runners took up the King & Queen of the Mountain challenge the next morning, which took place at Barkhan Mountain, proving to be the ultimate thrill chasers of the bunch.

Thomas Miller emerged as King of the Mountain at 39 minutes and 37.41 seconds, and the title of Queen of the Mountain was awarded to Tanja Hlasek at 1 hour and 9 minutes. The two winners were each awarded a cash prize of N$ 5000 sponsored by Barkhan Dune Retreat and Gondwana Collection Namibia accommodation vouchers valued at N$ 4000 each.

Whether it’s the Spreetshoogte Pass or Barkhan, this weekend was one for the books. See you all at the next challenge, the Gondwana Moonraker Ridge Trail Run on 9 November 2024!
