What not to do in Namibia

By Bernd Grahl
November 08, 2014

When visiting Namibia there are a few things you should absolutely not do. I know most lists on blogs promoting a country contains tips and hints of what you should be doing. I have compiled a list of what not to do in Namibia.

1. Do not refrain from mingling with the locals.

The Namibians are quite an interesting bunch of people. We are a very diverse and a friendly lot. To name just a few examples:

The Tswana people are the smallest cultural group in Namibia and will equip you with quite some nifty dance skills.

The Himbas will leave you in awe, with their red ochre painted skin which reminds you of the beautiful red dunes of Namibia.

2. Do not miss the historical attractions in the form of monuments, archaeology, geology and natural attractions.

The Christus Kirche in Windhoek is not only historical but very beautiful. In 1910 on October the 16th, the church was opened in a ceremony to celebrate the end of war between the Germans, the KhoiKhoi, Herero and Ovambo people. It is also known as the church of peace.

Near Keetmanshoop, visit a collection of quiver trees. The tree gets its name from the San people who use to make quivers from the branches.

How about a hike in the Fish River Canyon?

3. Do not let your mouth wander from the tastes the local cuisine.

A few months ago I wrote a blog post about the scrumptious dishes Namibia has to offer. Click here to read about it.

4. Do not pass on the chance to hire a car and go road tripping.

If you are wondering whether you need a 4x4 or not? The answer is, you can drive on most roads in Namibia with a sedan.

5. Last but not least, Do not.. Let me write this in capital letters. DO NOT forget to have fun.

There, you have it - these are the things you are not allowed to do in Namibia.

(Go on, I dare you to do it.)
