Some careers are built on qualifications. Others are built on reputation.
For Herbert Nduna, a barman at Chobe River Camp who is preparing to step into a new role as receptionist, the greatest lesson of his career has been simple: your work will always speak for you.
His journey with Gondwana Collection Namibia has been one of accountability, trust, adaptability and consistency.
In 2018, Herbert was selected through the local traditional authority to work on the construction of management housing at Namushasha River Lodge. It was temporary work, the kind of job that often ends when the project does. But he approached it with the same commitment he would bring to every role that followed.
Herbert’s work ethic caught the attention of management and when the construction contract ended, it wasn’t long before another opportunity opened up.
In 2019, Herbert joined Namushasha River Lodge as a waiter in training, and for three years, Herbert learned the rhythms of hospitality.
"I was never selective with my work," he says. "Some would people say, 'that task is not in my job description, so I won’t do the work requested,' but I wanted to learn everything,” he added.
That curiosity soon opened another door. By 2022, Herbert moved to reception, supporting and gaining experience across different departments, until his career took an unexpected turn and he left Namushasha River Lodge.
When Chobe River Camp needed someone to temporarily fill in at reception while a colleague was on maternity leave, Herbert accepted the contract determined to prove himself all over again. Management saw something they didn't want to lose.
When the receptionist returned, Herbert was moved to the bar, where he continued to demonstrate the same willingness to help wherever needed.
Today, that attitude has come full circle.
Herbert is preparing to return to the front office, this time as part of his long-term career progression.
When asked why Gondwana Collection would welcome him back after being fired, Herbert’s answer was simple: "My work speaks for itself."
It is a statement he backs up with action.
"I always wanted to learn," he explains. "If there was something new to do, I did it. I believe Gondwana Collection is a company where opportunities exist if you are willing to learn,” he continued.
Within the next few years, Herbert hopes to grow into a floor supervisor or assistant manager. For him, leadership isn't about authority or formal qualifications; it's about credibility.
His philosophy is grounded in experience. A good leader, he believes, understands many part of an operation because they've been willing to do every job themselves.
Sometimes, your greatest qualification is the reputation you earn through the work you do.
When speaking to young people considering a career in hospitality, Herbert offers advice that is both practical and deeply rooted in Namibian culture.
Many principles in the hospitality industry (like respect, who to serve first, welcoming guests and showing courtesy) are values people already learn at home and in their communities. The profession simply refines those traditions into world-class guest service.
Looking back, Herbert appreciates even the difficult managers who challenged him early in his career. At the time, he admits, the work felt demanding. Today, he recognises they were teaching him something far more valuable than technical skills.
"They wanted us to learn everything, from the bar to the restaurant, even fixing irrigation pipes in the garden. Now I understand why," Herbert reflected.
It is a perspective that reflects just how far he has come.
Herbert’s story is not one of a straight line. It is a story of a company that saw potential beyond circumstance and an individual who never stopped proving his determination.
