A Sunday at Avis Dam – adventures with my dog Milla

By Terttu Newaka
April 01, 2025

This past Sunday, I took my dog, Milla, to Avis Dam, one of Windhoek’s favourite spots for families, hikers, and dogs.

Thanks to recent rains, the water levels were high, turning Avis into a dog’s paradise. Some splashed about in the water, trotted along the trails with their nose to the ground, tails wagging in pure joy.  I even saw one determined pup proudly carrying a stick twice its size, looking like the proudest gatherer on Earth. Nearby, a lone kayaker glided among the ducks, adding to the peaceful chaos of the scene.

One dog, let’s call her The Escape Artist, was not so jovial—mine. On a tight leash, Milla watched longingly from sidelines as her fellow canines enjoyed the water.

Why, you may ask? Well, last year, in a legendary moment of rebellion, she yanked my 70-year-old landlady straight into the water before making a mad dash for freedom. Hours later, she was found sitting in a mud pit (looking rather pleased with herself, I might add). So, this time, I wasn’t taking any chances.

Milla was not happy about this arrangement. She tried her luck again, attempting to leap over the wall in a desperate bid for freedom, lunging toward the water like a furry torpedo—only to be yanked back by the leash. The betrayal in her eyes was palpable. If looks could spit, I too would have been swimming. But I was prepared, holding her tight on the leash. No escape today buddy!

So instead of swimming, Milla settled for the beautiful views and sat, probably plotting her next great escape.

The dam was full and the surrounding landscape was lush with tall grass swaying in the breeze. It was the perfect Sunday morning, even if my dog disagreed.

Despite her failed attempts at rebellion, we had a lovely time.

Will Milla ever earn back her swimming privileges? Maybe, maybe not. But for now, she’ll have to stick to dry land.

P.S No elderlies were harmed in the writing of this article. (My landlady is A-Okay)
