Gondwana Canyon Park Introduces Wild Camping

    By Terttu Newaka
    November 03, 2026

What if your next night in Namibia came with no walls, no Wi-Fi and no neighbours, only wilderness, stars and the sound of the desert?

Travellers can now experience a new kind of freedom at Canyon Roadhouse, by going wild camping in the vast wilderness of Gondwana Canyon Park, near the Fish River Canyon.

    A Wilderness of Your Own

Gondwana Canyon Park stretches across 116,000 hectares of protected wilderness, where rugged mountains, dry riverbeds and wide open plains create a unique landscape. Canyon Wild Camping opens up a designated 60,000-hectare area of the park for travellers who want to experience this landscape independently and intimately.

After checking in at Canyon Lodge or Canyon Roadhouse, campers receive a navigation map and essential guidelines for exploring the area responsibly. Then it is time to leave the lodge behind and head into the wilderness.

There is no fixed campsite waiting for you. Find a suitable spot, make it your own and experience a different kind of luxury, measured in space, silence and the rare privilege of having an extraordinary landscape almost entirely to yourself.

By day, the open terrain offers the possibility to encounter some of the park's wildlife, including oryx, springbok and zebra. With luck, you may even spot a giraffe or klipspringer. Watch the landscape change as the sun drops below the horizon. At night, the absence of artificial light reveals an entirely different wilderness, stretching upwards into Namibia's vast star-filled sky.

    Come Prepared. Leave No Trace.

Canyon Wild Camping is deliberately simple.

There is no running water, electricity, Wi-Fi, toilet or waste bin at the camping area. Campers need to bring their own camping equipment, food and sufficient water. It is an experience for self-sufficient travellers who are comfortable trading convenience for something far more valuable: freedom.

    That freedom comes with responsibility.

The golden rule is Leave No Trace. Campers are expected to minimise their impact, take all waste with them and leave their campsite exactly as they found it.

Your Campsite. Your Wilderness. Your Pace.

Campers can follow marked routes on a self-guided nature drive, keeping an eye out for wildlife as they travel through the park. Those looking for a deeper understanding of the landscape can also join selected activities from Canyon Lodge and Canyon Roadhouse, including morning or afternoon nature drives, a sunset nature drive and a sunrise hike.

For those wanting to venture further, the //Garas Self-Drive offers an additional 4x4 adventure through the rugged terrain of Gondwana Canyon Park.

And when the call of civilisation eventually becomes irresistible, Canyon Lodge and Canyon Roadhouse are close at hand, offering restaurants, bars, pools and other facilities. It is the best of both worlds: genuine wilderness when you want it, and a warm welcome when you return.

A different way to experience the Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and one of Namibia's great natural icons.

Canyon Wild Camping invites travellers to slow down and experience this wider wilderness rather than simply passing through it.

There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about it.

No itinerary dictating every hour. No walls separating you from the landscape. Just a vehicle, a tent, a few essentials and a piece of Namibia waiting to be explored.
