“Lettuce” Meet Joseph and the Hakusembe Garden

Written by Gondwana Collection | Aug 12, 2025 2:55:05 PM

As the first rays of sunrise spill across Hakusembe River Lodge, Joseph Kamongwa is already among the rows of green, his hands brushing over tender leaves as though greeting old friends.

Grounded and easy-going, Joseph’s presence is as unmistakable as the fresh scent of his thriving garden. The earth knows his touch. Since joining Gondwana in 2013, Joseph has spent over a decade cultivating fresh produce at Hakusembe River Lodge in the lush north-eastern corner of Namibia.

Today, the garden is a green haven that nourishes lodge guests. From the start of 2024 to date, Joseph and his team have harvested more than 1,000 crisp heads of lettuce and over 101 kg of hearty, ruffled spinach.

The lodge’s self-sufficiency not only keeps plates full, but also reduces wasteful packaging and minimises ecological disruption, adding another layer of satisfaction to every meal. Every leaf and root that reaches the lodge kitchen means fewer plastic wrappings, and a gentler touch on the land.

When Joseph isn’t tending to rows of leafy greens, he’s caring for what he fondly calls “nature’s candy” – sweet strawberries. The garden also produces parsley, spring onions, beetroot, carrots, and a medley of other fresh delights, ensuring the kitchen remains well-stocked year-round.

The success of this garden lies in Joseph’s dedication. Joseph’s magic happens in the hush of early mornings, in the patience of late afternoons, in the way he nurtures life from the soil.

So, “Lettuce” give thanks to Joseph Kamongwa – the man whose green fingers feed our guests and whose devotion keeps this garden thriving.
