DRC (The Democratic Resettlement Community – 2001) Swakopmund
Grow Together Pre Primary School
The official inauguration of the women community center took place on the 30th of November 2022 and since then the center has not only flourished but has also opened its door to more women so that they can develop skills and eventually make an income, thanks to the sewing projects.
The DRC (Democratic Resettlement Community) Women Project has for many years welcomed mothers and young children living near the dumpsite in the DRC district since 2010 when it was founded. The project grew stronger every year, developing skills and crafts sold all over Namibia and Germany.
Thanks to a beautiful Samaritan, the new center was built and more than 100 children are now being taught at the Grow Together Pre Primary School.
Every day the children receive a meal and after school, more children come to the center to get a plate of food.
Activities and after-school homework classes are also now being offered at the center which will only strengthen the impact of the center in its community.
Ms Anja Rohwer has been the driving force behind the center for many years. Today the center has a vegetable garden that produces veggies used in the kitchen. The center trains women in the creation of artifacts sold to the public and in curio shops, welcomes over 100 preschoolers, has a sewing projects, a library, an after-school homework support, has a janitor who home-built all the school tables and chairs and the center has a soup kitchen that serves a warm meal to the children and women living around the center.
The success story of the DRC Women Project and Pre Primary School is the proud achievements of a few women working together.
The Gondwana Care Trust is honored to be a small part of this extraordinary project and we can only thank you again to enable us to continually extend our hand when possible.
The beads artifacts can be purchased in all the Gondwana Curio shops and through the Narrative online shop. The Grow Together Pre Primary is part of the Back-to-School Christmas Bag Project and donations towards the library is done on Ad hoc basis.
Second hand clothing has also donated to the center so that the women can make use of the goods, either for the families in need or to be sold on small markets to raise funds.
The homework classes will be part of the RACHEL project being started in Namibia under the care of the Rotary Club. This will assist the children in getting help for their homework using the device to access an online library based on the Namibian curriculum. Thank you to the Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club for your support and trust.
