There comes a time in every person’s life where you need to analyze your existence to be able to break free from boundaries. We are imprisoned by our daily activities and responsibilities. Yes, we have to work to make a living, but if we don’t find a balance, it can drain us completely. To prevent this from happening is to take time to rediscover the true meaning of life.
Let’s hit the road to find our freedom. Our Destination? Aus! There are various reasons why this is just what the doctor ordered.
The Wild Horses of the Namib have perfected the meaning of rediscovering freedom. “They roam the sparsely vegetated plains of the Namib Desert in small groups. Over the decades they have conquered the desert as their habitat. They come to drink from the trough at Garub, some 20 km west of Aus. From a hide you can watch the horses and take pictures.”
Walking trails at Klein-Aus Vista - Desert Horse Inn are perfect to rediscover your freedom and who you are. They connect you to nature. What is freedom you might ask? Freedom is simply an elongated word that means to be free. The feeling of giving over all your troubles and casting it to the wind. It’s that moment you step outside, close your eyes, take a deep breath as the air and the wind gently brushes through your hair, softly caressing your skin. The trails lead you past the beautiful site of the Aus Mountains with golden yellow grass underneath your feet. It’s like a Sealy Posturepeadic experience for your soul – soft and relaxing.
For the more adventurous, the mountain biking trail will give you exactly the perspective you need. Some of the trails are easy and some will leave you with an exhilarating feeling of an Olympic winner who just received a gold medal. The trail leads you through rocky surfaces, guiding you up and down the mountain slopes. The only sounds you hear is that of pure silence broken by your tires making contact with the earth underneath. The trail brings you to a halt where the sun touches the tips of the golden grass.
For a western style outing, the town of Kolmanskop only promises to delight and charm you. Long ago this was a flourishing diamond mining community with an array of houses. All that is left, if you listen closely, are the voices of years ago drowned underneath a carpet of sand. The wind and the sun are the only permanent inhabitants of this community, softly whispering to visitors who come to photograph and wonder about the stories laden in the creaks of the windowsills. The only diamonds left today to be mined are the memories of years ago, stored in the sand.
For the historian in you, Luderitz gives you a piece of Bartlomias Dias’ legacy. He discovered the bay of this architectural harbor town in 1847. The culinary choices will leave you astonished with the crayfish as soft as butter and oysters freshly served right from the harbor onto your plate.
The area has a lot to offer but only if you allow it to touch the strings of your heart.
