Chobe River Camp: Before, After, and the Story in Between

Written by Gondwana Collection | May 18, 2025 7:30:00 AM

There’s something about the banks of the Chobe River that captures your heart – the stillness of early mornings, the call of birds overhead, and the sight of elephant's trudge through waters. For years, Chobe River Camp has been a sanctuary for travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-track safari experience. But as with all things beautiful, time eventually leaves its mark.

And so, we knew it was time to breathe new life into this beloved camp – not to change its soul, but to let it shine again.

Before: A Rustic Hideaway with Untapped Potential

Before renovations, Chobe River Camp was a charmingly rustic outpost. Its tented chalets, crafted from indigenous Mopane timber and canvas, offered simplicity and closeness to nature. While guests loved its natural character, the camp’s amenities were starting to show their age. The main lodge area, while warm and welcoming, lacked the modern comforts travellers have come to appreciate.

While the tented chalets and main lodge area began to show signs of wear over the years, the campsites remained as it always was, offering campers an unfiltered connection to the wilderness. Loved by those drawn to the freshness of nature, it continues to offer that same raw, simple charm today.

After: A Thoughtfully Transformed Retreat

Fast forward to April 2025, and Chobe River Camp has been beautifully transformed. The 20 tented chalets still hold the heart of what they were – built from Mopane timber and canvas, each one retaining the signature, earthy elegance. But step inside, and you’ll notice the difference.

Solar-powered amenities, en-suite bathrooms with modern finishes, and private decks overlooking the Chobe floodplains – it's still the wild, but with a new layer of quiet luxury.

The main lodge area once a modest gathering space, was completely reimagined from the ground up. What now stands is a brand-new central hub – featuring an inviting restaurant, a cosy bar, a cool clear swimming pool, and beautifully designed communal areas that invite guests to stay a little longer, with sundowners in hand and the sounds of nature all around.

The campsites remains just as it was – rustic, authentic, and perfectly positioned on floodplains. A favourite for guests who prefer to experience the wilderness in its purest form, it continues to offer a no-frills, back-to-nature stay for those drawn to the simplicity of camping under the Namibian stars.

A New Experience, A New Value

With these changes comes a natural refinement not just in experience, but also in value. The camp has always promised something special, and with its thoughtful upgrades, guests will notice the difference – not just in the surroundings, but in the little moments that make a stay memorable.

As the camp steps into this new chapter, so too does the value of the experience evolve to match its thoughtful transformation, reflecting the care, quality, and enhanced comforts now part of every stay. It’s a continuation of the same story, simply told with new textures, softer edges, and a deeper commitment to making every guest feel truly at home in the wild.

The Same Soul, a Fresh New Chapter

What hasn’t changed in the heart of Chobe River Camp – the sweeping floodplains, the orange-streaked sunsets, the quiet crackle of a fire under a sky bursting with stars. It remains a place for those who chase the wild, who find joy in simplicity, and who understand the quiet luxury of being exactly where you are.

We’re proud to welcome you back to a space that feels both familiar and beautifully new.

Come see what’s changed – and what never will.
